Gynecological Surgery Specialist

Heidi Oster, MD, PC

OB-GYN located in Lone Tree, CO

There are many types of gynecological procedures, both non-surgical and surgical. For example, a colposcopy is a common non-surgical procedure used to examine the cervix after an abnormal Pap smear, while a laparoscopy is a surgical procedure used to view the reproductive organs in your abdomen, such as your uterus or ovaries. Dr. Heidi Oster in Lone Tree, Colorado, offers a range of procedures in a safe, welcoming environment, and provides women with the latest technology for minimally-invasive gynecological surgeries.

Gynecological Surgery Q & A

What are gynecological surgeries?

Most gynecological surgeries today are minimally invasive and highly advanced. Gynecological surgeries are procedures performed on the female reproductive system to either diagnose or treat conditions such as:

  • cervical or ovarian cancer
  • uterine fibroids
  • ovarian cysts
  • Infertility
  • incontinence.

How are gynecological surgeries performed?

One of the most common methods of gynecological surgery is pelvic laparoscopic surgery, which Dr. Oster performs through small incisions in your belly button or lower abdomen. Because of this, laparoscopic surgery is less invasive, less painful, has a shorter recovery time, and there is a smaller chance of scarring as opposed to “open” surgery, or surgery performed directly through the abdomen, vagina, or cervix.

Laparoscopic surgery is performed to remove ovarian cysts, scar tissue, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis. Dr. Oster can even remove the uterus and cervix -- a total hysterectomy --  laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery can also be used to repair damaged organs or to provide additional support when older women experience incontinence and need help with bladder control. Although laparoscopic surgery does require general anesthesia, it is typically an outpatient surgery.

In addition to laparoscopic techniques, new and innovative robotic techniques can be used to help with certain gynecological surgeries, such as hysterectomies. Dr. Oster offers these robotic techniques, which have the minimally-invasive qualities of laparoscopic surgery, along with increased precision, control, and effectiveness. Will I need to go to the hospital for my gynecological procedure or surgery?

Many gynecological procedures and operations can be performed right in Dr. Oster’s office in Lone Tree, Colorado. This can save you time, money, and the need for general anesthesia. For example, she can often perform endometrial ablation (treatment for heavy period bleeding), LEEP procedures to prevent cervical cancer, and dilation and curettage procedures in-office. Depending on the type of procedure and your condition, an inpatient or outpatient visit to the hospital may be necessary, so you’ll want to book an appointment to discuss your options with Dr. Oster.
